Job Summary:
The Project Accountant is responsible for overseeing the financial activities of construction projects, including budgeting, cost tracking, billing, and financial reporting. This role ensures that construction projects are financially sound, compliant with regulations, and completed within budgetary constraints.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Monitor project expenditures and compare them to budgeted costs.
  • Assist Project Manager with identifying and analyzing cost variances, investigate discrepancies and implement corrective actions as needed.
  • Process vendor invoices, ensuring accuracy and adherence to contract terms.
  • Assist Project Manager in forecasting future project costs and financial performance.
  • Process all overhead and job cost invoices throughout the month.
  • Work closely with vendors and subcontractors on issues with billing and payments.
  • Reconcile and close accounts payable and accounts receivable on a monthly basis and assist in the monthly cash reconciliation process.
  • Maintain and prepare the monthly collection reports.
  • Respond to requests for information and analysis on various job cost and subcontractor issues.
  • Assist with Cost / Change Control, including change order review and analysis.
  • Assist with contingency draw.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for construction projects.
  • Analyze financial data to assess project profitability, cash flow, and financial performance.
  • Ensure compliance with accounting standards, regulatory requirements, and internal policies.
  • Maintain accurate and organized project financial records, including contracts, change orders, and payment documentation.
  • Assist in audits and reviews by providing documentation and supporting information as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Skills & Abilities:       

  • Strong understanding of GAAP, accounting principles, financial reporting, and budgeting.
  • Deeply familiar with construction accounting software.
  • Must possess effective communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently, take initiative, set priorities and see projects through to completion.
  • Ability to work on several projects as once.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required. CPA preferred.

Experience:

  • 3-5 years of accounting experience preferred; Construction accounting experience required.
  • Multi-Family construction experience required.
  • Experience working with Sage Intacct required.
  • Experience working with Procore Management Software preferred.

Physical Demands:

The employee is occasionally required to sit; stand for up to 8 hours; kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee may be required to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

  • Must be able to reach, grasp and operate all buttons and controls.
  • Must be able to communicate well with coworkers and supervisors.
  • Regularly required to communicate verbally and understand conversation.
  • May occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this position include color acuity, close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • The noise level in the work environment is typically high.

Work environment:

  • Office and showroom setting requires regular use of computers, meeting with clients, contractors, and colleagues.
